DISCORSO DI GIOVANNI PAOLO II AI PARTECIPANTI
AL X CORSO DI SPECIALIZZAZIONE IN RELAZIONI INTERNAZIONALI
PER DIPLOMATICI DI PAESI DELL’AMERICA LATINA*

Lunedì, 9 luglio 1990

"The role which you are called to play as builders of understanding and peace makes you deserving of our most careful consideration; since you are to a great extent the depositaries of our highest hopes for the much desired construction of a world in which peace, solidarity and cooperation are the channels which facilitate more just and human relations among all members of the international community and, in particular, among Latin American and Caribbean countries.

My pastoral visits to your continent have allowed me to be in direct contact with the situations in your countries which have been blessed by God with great material and human resources, yet are not without strong contrasts which, at times, cause instability and sometimes constitute an obstacle to the just and equitable sharing in created goods on the part of all.

"In a world like ours in which the stability and peace of nations is frequently threatened by opposing interests, your work as diplomats takes on an outstanding importance regarding human solidarity and civil progress. As you well know, this progress cannot be reduced to simple economic security; rather It has to be seen in terms of the harmonious and integral advancement of the human person, especially in terms of the person's spiritual and transcendent values.

"You are called, then, to make your contribution to the task of fostering greater understanding among nations, especially in Latin America , where the geography, the Christian faith and the culture have come together during the march of history. In your diplomatic endeavors spare no efforts to serve those noble peoples with whom I have had the pleasure to share unforgettable celebrations of faith and hope during my apostolic trips.
